Earl becomes a major hurricane, could hit Maritimes this weekend

Hurricane Earl turned into a major Category 3 storm on Monday as it lashed northeast Caribbean islands on a track that could see it swiping the U.S. East Coast in the next few days, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Hurricane Earl, now a powerful Category 4 storm, barreled toward the U.S. coast early Tuesday after battering tiny islands across the northeastern Caribbean with heavy rain and winds that damaged homes and toppled power lines.

Hurricane Earl battered tiny islands across the northeastern Caribbean with heavy rain and roof-ripping winds Monday as it rapidly intensified into a major Category 4 storm taking a path projected to menace the United States.
