Earl becomes a major hurricane, could hit Maritimes this weekend
Hurricane Earl turned into a major Category 3 storm on Monday as it lashed northeast Caribbean islands on a track that could see it swiping the U.S. East Coast in the next few days, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
The Sept. 1, 8 p.m. National Hurricane Center forecast tracking map shows Hurricane Earl located about 565 miles south-southeast of Cape Gatters, NC.

Hurricane Earl battered tiny islands across the northeastern Caribbean with heavy rain and roof-ripping winds Monday as it rapidly intensified into a major Category 4 storm taking a path projected to menace the United States.
